Our commitment
SignPad aims to be usable by everyone, including people with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive disabilities. We work toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, which is the standard recommended by the Australian Human Rights Commission for compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth).
Where we are today
What we already do:
- High-contrast colour palette for body text (dark ink on cream background, well above the 4.5:1 WCAG minimum).
- Semantic HTML with proper heading hierarchy on every page.
- Form fields with associated labels, not just placeholder text.
- Keyboard-navigable nav, buttons and the signing flow.
- Visible focus rings on interactive elements.
- Plain-English copy throughout, short sentences, no jargon without explanation.
- Responsive design that adapts to small screens and large text settings.
- Allowing the system zoom and reader text-size settings on both desktop and mobile.
What we don't yet do (we're being honest):
- Full screen-reader testing, we've used VoiceOver and NVDA in spot-checks but haven't done a comprehensive audit yet.
- Sign-language video alternatives for our help content.
- Easy-read summary versions of the privacy policy and terms.
- Confirmed colour-blindness safe interface (we use a single brand colour and rely on text labels, but haven't formally tested).
The signing flow specifically
The recipient signing flow is the part of SignPad most often used by people who didn't choose this software. We've put extra care into it:
- Every required field is announced as required to assistive technology.
- The "draw your signature" canvas has a "type your name" alternative for users who can't draw on a touchscreen or with a mouse.
- The disclosure-consent step is shown as a checkbox with full text, never hidden behind a tooltip.
- The audit page is plain HTML with no JavaScript dependency for the certificate of completion view.
Need help signing?
If you've been sent a SignPad document and you can't access it because of a disability or assistive technology limitation, email sign@signpad.com.au with "Accessibility help" in the subject line. We'll work with the sender on an alternative format, for example, an accessible PDF you can sign with your screen reader, or a phone-witnessed signature that we record into the audit log on your behalf. This help is free.
Report an accessibility issue
If you find a part of SignPad that doesn't work with your assistive technology, please tell us. Email sign@signpad.com.au with "Accessibility issue" in the subject line. Include:
- The page or feature where the issue happens.
- The assistive technology you're using (e.g. JAWS, VoiceOver, NVDA, Dragon).
- The browser and OS.
- A description of what you tried to do and what happened.
We aim to acknowledge within 2 business days and to plan a fix within 14 business days. Critical accessibility blockers in the signing flow are treated as P1 incidents.
Roadmap
- Independent WCAG 2.1 AA audit by an Australian Network on Disability accredited auditor.
- Public conformance statement once the audit is in.
- Easy-read versions of the privacy policy and terms.
- Sign-language Auslan video versions of the signer onboarding.
